The Elena Monte Lab

Welcome to the Monte Laboratory, part of the Department of Molecular Genetics at the CRAG Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics.

We study how plants perceive and respond to changing ambient light signals to synchronize their growth in daily day-night cycles, or in the dark-to-light transition occurring when seedlings emerge into sunlight after germinating underground.

We are interested in studying how the phytochrome (phy) family of photoreceptors and a group of phy-interacting transcription factors (the PIFs) regulate these dark- and light-mediated processes.

Our studies contribute to understanding how plants modulate their growth and development to adjust to the continuous variations in their ambient light, an essential capability of plants as sessile organisms to optimize their fitness to the environment.
